macOS Big Sur is the latest supported version of macOS.  It is advised that all Macs be upgraded to this version.

Known Issues:

1. macOS Catalina and later does not support 32-bit applications.

a. To determine if this impacts you, go to the Apple menu () in the upper left of your screen and select About this Mac.  Click System Report... scroll down to Software and select Applications.

b. There is a column labeled 64-bit and if it shows as no then the software is not compatible.  Take note of the Obtained from column, as some software is built in and will be resolved by upgrading.

2. VMWare Fusion 11 and earlier is not compatible with macOS Big Sur.

a. To determine which version you have installed, open VMWare Fusion and click the VMWare Fusion menu in the upper left.  Then select About VMWare Fusion.

b. Please contact the ETO to purchase an upgrade before installing macOS Big Sur if you have version 11 or earlier.

Download macOS Big Sur

If you're using macOS Mojave or later, get macOS Big Sur via Software Update: Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Software Update.

Or use this link to open the macOS Big Sur page on the App Store: Get macOS Big Sur. Then click the Get button.

Install macOS Big Sur

After downloading, the installer opens automatically. Click Continue and follow the onscreen instructions.

Please allow installation to complete without putting your Mac to sleep or closing its lid. During installation, it might restart and show a progress bar or blank screen several times. You might find it easiest to begin installation in the evening so that it can complete overnight, if needed.

If you need assistance with any of the above, please contact the ETO either by emailing at [email protected] or calling at 434-924-7086.
