How to Update macOS

Overview
This article provides step-by-step instructions for updating macOS to the latest available version. Keeping macOS up to date ensures your device remains secure, stable, and compatible with current applications.
Prerequisites
Before proceeding with a macOS update, ensure the following:
- You have a stable internet connection
- Your Mac is connected to a power source (for laptops)
- You have administrator access to the device
- You have sufficient free storage space (recommended: 20 GB or more)
Recommended: Back Up Your Data
Before installing updates, back up your Mac to prevent data loss.
- Connect an external storage device
- Navigate to System Settings → General → Time Machine
- Select Back Up Now
Procedure: Update macOS
Option 1: Using System Settings (Preferred Method)
- Click the Apple menu () in the top-left corner
- Select System Settings
- Click General
- Select Software Update
- Wait for the system to check for available updates
- Click one of the following:
- Update Now (for minor updates)
- Upgrade Now (for major macOS versions)
- Follow the on-screen prompts to complete installation
Note: Your Mac may restart multiple times during the update process.
Option 2: Using the App Store (Legacy Systems)
For older macOS versions:
- Open the App Store
- Search for the desired macOS version
- Click Get or Download
- Follow the installation prompts
Enable Automatic Updates (Optional)
To keep your Mac updated automatically:
- Go to System Settings → General → Software Update
- Click the info (i) icon next to Automatic Updates
- Enable the following options:
- Check for updates
- Download updates
- Install macOS updates
Troubleshooting
Issue: Update Not Downloading
- Verify internet connectivity
- Restart the Mac and retry
- Check Apple System Status for outages
Issue: Insufficient Storage
- Remove unused applications
- Transfer files to external storage
- Empty Trash
Issue: Update Stuck or Frozen
- Wait at least 30–60 minutes before taking action
- Restart the Mac if no progress occurs
- Retry the update in Safe Mode if necessary
Additional Notes
- Do not power off your Mac during an update
- Close all applications before starting the update
- Schedule updates during non-business hours when possible
